Clutch and transmission in Coburg North

A clutch that slips, a pedal that has gone heavy, or a gearbox that hunts and thumps between gears. We drive the car, find the fault and tell you what the repair actually is before anything comes apart.

Drivetrain faults are the ones people put off, because the guesses run from a cheap adjustment to a full rebuild. At 1/87 Newlands Road you get a diagnosis first and a price second. Call 03 7054 8232 if you would rather talk it through first.

We diagnose before we quote

Two cars with the same complaint can need very different work. A judder pulling away might be a worn friction plate, a leaking rear main seal soaking that plate, or an engine mount letting the whole driveline move. Those are three repairs at three prices.

So the job starts with a road test in the gears where you feel the problem, a look underneath for leaks, wear and movement, and a scan of the transmission control module on cars that carry one. You get the finding in plain words, with the options and what each one costs, before a bolt is undone.

Symptoms worth booking in for

Driving on a slipping clutch or a gearbox that is losing fluid usually makes the repair bigger. Book it in while it is still one part.

  • Engine revs climb but the car does not pull, especially uphill or in a high gear
  • The clutch pedal has gone heavy, spongy or bites right at the top
  • A shudder or judder as you pull away from the lights
  • An automatic that flares, jerks or hangs on to a gear too long
  • Grinding or a crunch going into a gear on a manual
  • A burnt smell after a hill climb or stop start traffic
  • A red or amber transmission warning on the dash

The work we take on

Clutch replacement on manual cars, taking the pressure plate, friction plate and release bearing as a set, plus the seals and the flywheel check that go with it. On automatics, fluid and filter to specification, leaks, mounts, linkages, sensors and the faults that drop a gearbox into limp mode. Where a car needs internal gearbox work we diagnose it and manage the repair from here, so you deal with one workshop.

  • Clutch kits and hydraulics on manual cars
  • Automatic transmission fluid and filter to specification
  • Leak tracing on gearboxes, seals and coolers
  • Mounts, linkages, cables and selector faults
  • Transmission fault codes, live data and limp mode diagnosis

How the job runs

  1. Tell us what you feel

When it happens, which gears, hot or cold, and whether a light came on. That description narrows the search before the car arrives.

  2. Road test and inspection

We drive it in the conditions you described, put it on the hoist and scan it where the car supports a scan.

  3. You get the finding and the price

What is wrong, what the repair involves, and what it costs. Nothing goes ahead until you say yes.

  4. Repair and road test again

The car goes back out on the road after the work so we know the complaint has actually gone.

What it costs

There is no honest single price here. A clutch in a small front wheel drive hatch and one in an all wheel drive European wagon are different jobs on labour and on parts, and an automatic that needs a sensor is nothing like one that needs internal work.

Book the car in for the diagnosis, and you get a written price for the repair before it starts. If you want a rough idea first, call 0451 109 786 with the make, model, year and what the car is doing.

Why drivers bring drivetrain work here

Because you talk to the mechanic who drove your car, not to a counter. The diagnosis comes off the road test, so the person telling you what the gearbox is doing is the one who felt it do it. Nothing extra lands on your invoice either: a second fault comes to you with a price attached, and you decide whether it is done now or later.

Common questions

How do I know if it is the clutch or the gearbox?
Often you cannot tell from the driver's seat, because a slipping clutch and a gearbox losing drive feel similar. A road test and a look underneath usually separate them quickly, and on cars with a transmission control module the fault codes narrow it further. That is why the road test comes before the quote.
Can I keep driving with a slipping clutch?
You can, but it tends to cost more. A slipping clutch runs hot, and heat damages the flywheel as well as the friction plate. What could have been a clutch kit can become a clutch kit plus a flywheel. Book it in while the car still drives normally when cold.
Do you rebuild automatic gearboxes in house?
We diagnose the fault, carry out fluid, filter, sensor, cooler, mount and leak repairs, and manage the job from start to finish. Where a gearbox needs internal work we arrange it and stay your single point of contact, so you are not chasing two different places for one car.
Will changing the transmission fluid fix a shudder?
Sometimes. Old or wrong specification fluid causes shudder and harsh shifts on plenty of cars, so the right fluid is a sensible first step. If the shudder is mechanical, fluid will not cure it, and we say so rather than selling you the service anyway.
