Mahoneys Road and Sydney Road keep you clear of the city

Thomastown drivers come across on Mahoneys Road and turn south onto Sydney Road, which brings you to Newlands Road without going anywhere near town. Thomastown station is on the Mernda line if you want to leave the car and keep going.

Between the industrial estates and the long residential streets, most Thomastown cars do a mix of stop start work and longer runs up the Hume, which is a demanding combination for oil and brakes both.

Plenty of bookings start with a car someone is about to buy

There are plenty of private sales and yards around the northern suburbs, and time on a hoist tells you things a test drive never will: fluid condition, tyre and brake life, leaks, and whether the panel gaps say the car has been hit.

Servicing is the other half of it. Logbook work on cars still under warranty is done to the manufacturer's schedule and stamped, and older cars get a straight service with a list of what will need attention next and roughly when.

Book an inspection for the morning if you can

A car you are considering is better looked at early in the day, so there is time to talk through what was found before the seller loses patience or someone else turns up with cash.

You get a phone call with what we found and what it will cost, before anything beyond the booked job happens.

Bring whatever service history the seller handed over

For a service, the logbook and the kilometres. For a car you are thinking of buying, bring the history and the rego, and make sure the seller knows the car is coming to us and roughly for how long.

We are open Saturday as well as the weekdays

Monday to Friday 8:00am to 6:00pm, Saturday 9:00am to 4:00pm, closed Sunday. Mobile 0451 109 786, workshop 03 7054 8232, or WhatsApp the rego of the car you are thinking of buying and when it is free to be looked at.

Common questions

Can you check a used car before I buy it?
Yes. The car goes on a hoist and gets looked over properly: engine and transmission, brakes, tyres, suspension, fluids, leaks, and any sign of past damage. You get told what was found and what it is likely to cost, so you can walk away or negotiate with something solid behind you.
Does that mean the car gets a roadworthy certificate?
No. We are not a licensed roadworthy tester, so we cannot issue a certificate. What we can do is inspect the car, tell you what would fail and repair it. For the certificate itself you will need a licensed tester.
Where are you from Thomastown?
West of you, in Coburg North, on Newlands Road just off Sydney Road. The usual run across is Mahoneys Road and then south, which avoids the city altogether. Ring the mobile if you are nearly here and cannot pick the driveway from the road.
Do you service Korean cars?
Regularly. Hyundai and Kia come through every week, along with Japanese, Chinese and European makes. Servicing follows the manufacturer's schedule for that model and the book gets stamped, so the warranty on a newer car is not affected by having the work done here rather than at the dealer.
