Suspension does two jobs at once. It keeps the ride comfortable, and it keeps the tyres pressed onto the road so the brakes and steering can do their work. When a bush or a shock is finished, both jobs suffer, and the tyre bill arrives before the ride complaint does.

Melbourne roads do not help. Tram tracks, patched bitumen and kerbs take a steady toll on bushes and ball joints, and the wear is gradual enough that most drivers adapt to it without noticing.

What you notice first

  • A knock or clunk over speed humps and rough bitumen
  • The car floating or bouncing after a dip
  • Steering that wanders and needs constant correction
  • A pull to one side on a flat road
  • Tyres worn on the inside or outside edge only
  • A groan or squeal when parking
  • One corner sitting lower than the rest

Suspension is a chain, and each link fails differently

Rubber perishes, springs sag, oil leaks past a seal and steel joints develop play. Knowing which one you have is most of the job.

  • Shock absorbers and struts, which lose damping oil slowly rather than all at once
  • Coil springs, which crack and sag, dropping ride height on one corner
  • Control arm and sway bar bushes, which perish and let the wheel move where it should not
  • Ball joints and tie rod ends, which develop play and make the steering vague
  • Sway bar links, the usual answer to a light knock over small bumps
  • Strut mounts and bearings, which groan as the wheel turns at low speed
  • Power steering pumps, racks, hoses and the electric assist units on newer cars

Worn parts rarely stay a comfort problem. A tired shock lets the tyre skip, which lengthens braking distance and scallops the tread, and a perished bush moves the alignment every time you turn in.

How we check it

  1. A drive first

    Over the sort of road the fault shows up on. A noise you hear every morning is easier to find than one described at the counter.

  2. Up on the hoist

    Each corner loaded and levered for play, shocks checked for leaks, bushes and boots inspected, tyre wear read for what it says about the geometry.

  3. Shown and quoted

    You get to see the joint that moves or the shock that is wet, with a price and an order of priority if there is more than one item.

  4. Repaired and aligned

    Anything that changes the geometry needs a wheel alignment afterwards, and we tell you when the job calls for one, because otherwise the new part just wears the tyres in a different pattern.

Tyre wear is the honest witness

Turn the wheel fully and look at the inside edge of a front tyre. A front tyre worn away on one shoulder while the rest of it still looks new is usually telling you about a joint rather than about the tyre. A feathered edge points the same way, and a scalloped surface usually means a shock has stopped controlling the wheel.

That is why we read the tyres before quoting on suspension. The wear pattern usually names the corner, and often the part, before the hoist confirms it.

What it costs

What decides the bill is how many items come up on the hoist, and that is not knowable from the noise you are hearing. One worn link is a short job. A link, a bush and a leaking strut on the same corner is a different afternoon. Common questions

Do shock absorbers have to be replaced in pairs?
On the same axle, yes. A new shock on one side and a worn one on the other gives the car different damping left to right, which upsets the way it settles in a corner and wears the tyres unevenly. Front and rear can be done separately if only one end is tired.
Is a clunk over bumps dangerous?
It depends entirely on what is making it. A worn sway bar link is a noise more than a hazard, while play in a ball joint or a tie rod end is a genuine safety item. The only way to know which one you have is to get it up on the hoist and feel for the movement.
Do I need an alignment after suspension work?
If we replace anything that locates the wheel, such as a control arm, a tie rod end or a strut, then yes. The geometry moves with those parts. Replacing a shock absorber alone on many cars does not change the settings, and we will tell you which case applies.
My steering feels heavy. Is that suspension?
It can be low tyre pressure, a failing power steering pump, low fluid, a seized strut bearing or an electric assist fault on a newer car. We start with the simple checks, then test the system that is actually doing the assisting rather than guessing between them.
