Fawkner is directly north of us. Sydney Road runs south out of Fawkner past the Memorial Park and down into Coburg North, and we sit off to the east of it on Newlands Road. No freeway and no ring road, one road for most of the way and a couple of turns at the end.

A screw in the tread is usually a repair

Punctures and tyres are constant. A screw picked up on a worksite road can be repaired rather than replaced wherever the damage sits in the tread and the rest of the tyre is sound. New tyres are supplied, fitted and balanced here as well, so a ruined tyre does not turn into two stops on the same day.

Batteries are the other one. A battery that starts the car fine in March will struggle on the first cold morning in June, and the warning usually arrives as slow cranking rather than as a car that will not go. We test the battery and the charging system together, because a flat battery is sometimes an alternator telling you it has had enough.

Tell us if the ute has to be on site

A work vehicle that has to be back on a job in the morning is a different booking to a car that can sit with us all day, so say which one you have when you ring and we will put it on a hoist accordingly. Ask at the same time whether the job is short enough to wait for, because a tyre or a battery is a different proposition to a full service.

You get told what can safely wait

Older cars are welcome and they are a good part of what a workshop like ours sees. You get told what has to be done now, what can safely wait until the next service, and what is not worth spending money on at all, and then you decide. Nothing goes ahead without a price agreed on the phone first.

Sunday is the one day we are shut

Common questions

Can a puncture be repaired or do I need a new tyre?
That depends on where the damage sits. A nail in the tread with the rest of the tyre in good condition is normally repairable. Damage in the sidewall, or a tyre that has been driven on while flat, is not, because the structure inside has already been hurt. We take the tyre off the rim, look inside it and tell you which one you have.
How do I know the battery is on the way out?
Slow cranking on a cold morning is the usual first sign, followed by the headlights dimming as the engine turns over. Some cars also start switching off electrical extras to save power. We test the battery under load and check the charging system before selling you anything, because the fault is not always the battery itself.
My battery is going flat. Can you fit a new one the same day?
Ring with the make, model and year and we will look at what can be had for your car before you drive down. Some batteries are on the shelf and some are ordered in, and a newer car may need the replacement registered to the charging system as part of the job, so the phone call is worth more than turning up and hoping.
Do you work on MG, Haval and the other newer makes?
Yes. They are serviced the same way as anything else, to the schedule in the book with parts and oils that meet the specification the maker set. If the car is still inside its warranty period, the stamped book and an itemised invoice are what keep that cover intact, and you get both.
